We Spend £30 Wrecking Nature For Every £1 Protecting It (The Biodiversity Finance Gap)

The most expensive thing on Earth is free


Here's a question that sounds silly and isn't.


What is a bee worth?


A beehive

Not a hive. Not honey. One bee, doing what bees do, flying from flower to flower, moving pollen around, and in doing so causing plants to produce fruit.


The instinctive answer is "nothing, it's a bee." And that instinct is precisely the problem I want to talk about, because it's the same instinct that has quietly made nature the most badly mispriced asset on the planet.


So let's actually answer it.


Roughly three quarters of the world's leading food crops depend, to some degree, on animal pollination. Apples. Almonds. Coffee. Tomatoes. Cocoa, yes, chocolate. If you'd like to know what a world without pollinators looks like, imagine a supermarket where the entire fresh produce aisle has been deleted, along with coffee and chocolate, and what remains is largely wind-pollinated grain: bread, rice, porridge. Forever.


The economic value of that pollination service runs into the hundreds of billions of dollars a year.

And what do we pay for it?


Nothing. Not a penny. It arrives free, every year, done by insects, and appears on absolutely nobody's balance sheet anywhere in the world.


That is the entire story of nature and money in one example. The service is essential. The price is zero. And things with a price of zero get destroyed, because nothing that costs nothing is ever defended.


The thirty-to-one problem


Now let's put a number on how badly this is going.


The UN Environment Programme tracks where money actually flows. In a recent year:


  • Roughly $7 trillion flowed into economic activities that actively degrade nature.

  • Roughly $200 billion flowed into protecting or restoring it.


That is a ratio of about thirty to one, against nature.


For every pound the world spends looking after the natural systems that produce its food, water and air, it spends about thirty pounds damaging them.


Now, I want to be careful here, because it would be easy to read that as "capitalism is evil, everyone is a villain." That's not what it says, and the truth is more interesting and more fixable.


Almost nobody in that $7 trillion is trying to destroy nature. They're building houses, growing food, mining metals, making things people want. The destruction is a side effect, and crucially, it's a side effect that costs them nothing, because nature has no price.


Which brings us to the most useful concept in environmental economics, and one that I think everybody should know.


The externality (or, the noisy neighbour)


Imagine you run a factory next to a river. Making your product creates waste. You have two options:


  1. Pay £1 million a year to treat and dispose of the waste safely.

  2. Pour it into the river for free.


If pouring it into the river is legal and free, then a rational business, one competing against other businesses on price, will do exactly that. Not because the owner is a monster, but because the competitor who does it will undercut the one who doesn't, and the one who doesn't will go bust.


A river flowing with money

The cost hasn't vanished. It's been moved. The people downstream now pay it: in poisoned fish, in illness, in a river nobody can swim in. They pay it in money they never spent and never agreed to spend.


Economists call this an externality, a cost that's real but sits outside the transaction. The buyer doesn't pay it. The seller doesn't pay it. Someone else does, usually someone who never got a say.


Nature is the great dumping ground of externalities. It's where the costs of the modern economy have been quietly parked for two centuries, precisely because it never sent an invoice.


And the reason the ratio is thirty-to-one is not because people are wicked. It's because destruction is free and protection isn't. Change that, and the ratio changes.


The invoice is arriving


Here's what's actually new, and why I think this stops being an ethics story and becomes a money story.


Something like half of all global economic output is moderately or highly dependent on nature, on functioning water systems, healthy soil, pollination, fisheries, timber, stable weather. That's not a slogan. It's the assessment underpinning why central banks and financial regulators have started treating nature loss as a systemic financial risk, in the same category as a banking crisis.


Think about what that means. If half the economy depends on something, and that something is degrading, then that degradation is not an environmental issue that businesses can choose to care about. It is a supply chain issue they have no choice about.


The soil that grows your crops has a finite amount of topsoil left. The fish stock that supplies your business is a finite population being drawn down. The predictable weather your insurance model was built on is becoming less predictable.


And the money world has finally started to notice. There's now a framework called the TNFD, the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures, which is, in plain English, a standard way for companies to report their exposure to nature. Not out of virtue: out of the recognition that you cannot manage a risk you have never measured.


More than 700 organisations, representing over $22 trillion in assets, have signed up to it.


That's not a niche green initiative. That's a substantial chunk of the world's investable capital deciding it needs to start putting nature on the balance sheet.


The gap, and the opportunity


So here's where it lands.


The amount the world needs to spend, each year, to protect and restore nature at the necessary scale is estimated at around $700 billion. We're spending a fraction of that.


That difference is called the biodiversity finance gap, and it's one of the largest funding shortfalls anywhere in the global economy.


But here's the framing I find genuinely more useful, and more hopeful, than "we need $700 billion we haven't got."


A 2026 analysis identified over 50 distinct nature-linked business opportunities that could collectively generate up to $10 trillion a year in revenue and cost savings by 2030. Regenerative farming that rebuilds soil instead of stripping it. Sustainable aquaculture. Circular packaging.


Ecosystem restoration. Nature-based flood defence, which is frequently cheaper than concrete.


Read that carefully, because it's the point of the whole article: this is not a case of needing to conjure money from nowhere. The money already exists. It's currently flowing through the economy at a rate of $7 trillion a year into the activities that cause the damage.


The problem isn't the amount of capital. It's the direction of it.


What I'd actually want you to do with this


Not buy anything. I'll say that in every article I write, because it's true and because the moment I start telling you what to buy, I've stopped being useful to you.


What I want is for you to be able to do one thing: look at a system and ask "who is paying for this, and who should be?"


That question is the whole game. It's what turns "the environment" from a vague thing you feel guilty about into a hard-edged, analysable, financial question:


  • Where are the costs being hidden?

  • Who's absorbing them?

  • What happens to the businesses currently getting nature for free, when nature stops being free?

  • And who is building the things that will be needed when it does?


Because that last one, the transition from free to priced, is not a matter of if, It's already begun.


Carbon went from free to priced, and it reshaped entire industries. Water is starting. Nature is next, and the disclosure frameworks are the first tremor.


The companies exposed to a nature bill they've never had to pay do not currently know they're exposed, because nobody's ever made them count it.


The bee has never sent an invoice.


That's about to change.
